Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) are our core sustainability pillars and are a shared responsibility with our team, suppliers, and partners. We believe in adding value to the world in which we live and operate, through sustainable practices and activities.

From 2024’s annual report onwards, we will be aligning with the EU Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive legislation and are aligned with The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, and are undertaking a double materiality assessment to ensure the core 12 ESRSs upon which we report, address and prioritise the risks gentoo’s operations may create and impact.

A message from our CEO

jonas warrer
Jonas Warrer CEO
At gentoo, we believe that sustainability is not just about regulations and mandatory reporting, but a responsibility that we all share. We are dedicated to ensuring that our company's operations and procedures align with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, The Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us - it is a core value that guides every decision we make, from the products and services we offer to the way we conduct our business and grow our team.

What sustainability means to us

“Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility and we want to equip our team and the communities in which we live and work, with knowledge and understanding on how every decision makes an impact, and each person has the ability to decide whether it is a positive or negative one.

Breaking down the complexities of ESG into enjoyable, targeted, measurable and achievable goals, means better decisions will be made collectively, and we will all ‘win’ as a team.

We believe in making each activity to achieve these goals fun, relatable and a positive experience, and always communicate the benefits to ensure continued buy-in and commitment from our people.”

Micha Leth Hellerøe, Director of People

Moving from our four key pillars to CSRD in 2024

Setting meaningful and measurable sustainability goals. This is being done through a double materiality assessment for the new CSRD and the 12 ESRS standards.

As a result of the risk and opportunity assessment, we will further refine the objectives which are material to our business. Currently, we are focusing on:

Environmental

Decarbonising our operations through measuring our Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gases, implementing a reduction and offsetting plan with targets in 2024/2025 across the business practices, protect the planet with a variety of social events to clean waterways and reforest the world through our #GiGMediaForest.

Social

  • Promoting a sustainable player journey by ensuring a healthy and fair playing environment, clear communications and policies on Responsible Gambling, and improving our technologies and platforms.
  • Strengthening our attraction, retention and tenure rates by continuously improving the employee experience, supporting our people in their professional development and well-being journey, curating career paths with clear goals and milestones, and reviewing our policies and practices to ensure our team has a nurturing framework and environment to be the best versions of themselves.
  • Ensuring Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity for every colleague through continuous review of human resource practices, use of language in communication, how we market ourselves, regulation and education of our team.

Governance

Maintaining the highest standards of business conduct and ethics. From an entry-level colleague to our C-level and Board, we uphold the highest standards, promoting transparency and accountability in all our business operations.

Our governance structure encourages stakeholder engagement, ensures compliance with regulations, cultivates trust, and mitigates risks.

Gentoo Media maintains a strict stance against bribery and corruption, prohibiting any form of offering, giving, solicitation or acceptance of bribes.

Volunteer days in our workplace

We offer a top-tier employee benefits package, encompassing a well-being allowance, professional development opportunities, and training programs.

Part of this package is the Gentoo Media paid volunteer day where each colleague can take part in media-organised sustainability and charity events, or use the day to support a charity closer to home.

Some of our most popular events are UN Earth Day, UN Ocean Day where we organise beach and waterway cleanups, tree planting and more.

How we are improving our environmental footprint

  • Measuring our Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions and we are working on an emissions reduction plan, using the carbon accounting platform Greenly
  • Growing #GiGMediaForest with Tree-Nation, reforesting the world and benefiting the communities in which we plant, and offsetting some of our CO2 emissions
  • Promoting paperless offices
  • Measuring and offsetting our travel emissions using TravelPerk and GreenPerk
  • Reduced travel and emissions by investing in and optimising digital meeting facilities and communication channels
  • Recycling: paper, plastic, glass, organic material, printer toner, and batteries in all of our locations, including electronic waste
  • Promoting green travel methods – walking, cycling and car sharing to the office
  • Smart energy consumption – Commenced quarterly recording of water and energy consumption with the view to reducing waste, including already installed LED energy-saving light systems.
  • Eco-friendly merchandise – Making our merchandise sustainable from factory worker conditions, material resources, and shipping and delivery perspectives.
